A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
