Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
