Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
