Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
