Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the residents for information.
An important official stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
